image imageJunior teachers participated in a CILM (Collaborative Inquiry in the Learning of Mathematics) on Wednesday. They collaborated together to plan a math lesson based on student data from the days leading up to this day. A problem was crafted for students to solve and then the “team” went into the grade 6 class. Mr Hori and Mrs Agnello co-taught the lesson while the other members were silent observers watching how the students learn – how did they tackle the problem; what kinds of talk and discussion did they have; what questions did they ask; what math  strategies did they use to solve the problem? Did they attempt to check their answer or question their process?  We’re all students engaged and participating in their group? what did students do when they did not understand or got lost? Above, you see the teachers discussing the student work and deciding on feedback to give to consolidate learning –  Strengths, next steps and effective strategies that were used. Results of this work give direction for tomorrow’s instruction. Algebraic equations have taken on a whole new meaning and understanding for these grade 6 students because we teach math skills and concepts through problem solving. Students talk, wrestle ideas, share, question, illustrate,  explain, write, collaborate until they discover the learning. Our teachers are learners too!!!!!
